What to Expect at a Temecula Wine Tasting: Fees, Pours, and Tips

October 23, 2026

At a Temecula wine tasting, you pay a tasting fee for a flight of small pours, usually four to six wines, served one at a time from lighter to fuller. Most tasting rooms welcome walk-ins, and larger groups should call ahead. No expertise is needed. You’re there to find out what you like.

If it’s your first time, here’s how it works, what it costs, and how to get the most out of it.

How does a wine tasting work?

You walk up to the bar or sit at a table, and the staff pour you a series of small tastes, one wine at a time. A tasting pour is much smaller than a glass, just enough for a few sips. The order usually runs from sparkling and white wines to rosé, then reds, and sometimes a dessert wine to finish.

Between pours, the person serving you will usually tell you a little about each wine: the grape, what it tastes like, and what makes it special. Ask anything you want. There are no silly questions in a tasting room, and the staff would much rather talk to someone curious than someone nervous.

How much does a wine tasting cost in Temecula?

Tasting fees vary from winery to winery, and they change over time, so check each winery’s website before you go. Many wineries waive or discount tastings for their wine club members.

At Marshall Stuart Fine Wines, a walk-in tasting is $20 for five tastes of our current small-batch wines. Wine club members get complimentary tastings built into every tier of the club.

Do you need a reservation?

Policies differ by winery. Many smaller tasting rooms welcome walk-ins, while some larger estates ask everyone to book ahead, especially on weekends.

Here, walk-ins are always welcome. If you’re coming with a group of 9 or more, call the tasting room to reserve (the number is on our visit page) so we can have space and staff ready for you.

How to taste wine without feeling lost

You don’t need to know any wine vocabulary. A simple routine helps you notice more:

  1. Look. Hold the glass up. Is it pale or deep, bright or dark?
  2. Swirl. A gentle swirl lets the aromas open up.
  3. Smell. Take a sniff before you sip. Fruit, flowers, spice, or something else?
  4. Sip. Let it sit in your mouth for a moment. Is it light or full, crisp or smooth, fruity or earthy?
  5. Decide. The only question that matters: do you like it?

Most tasting rooms keep a dump bucket on the bar. It’s completely normal to pour out the rest of a taste you don’t love, or to pace yourself if you’re visiting more than one winery.

What should you wear?

Wear something comfortable. Temecula is relaxed wine country, not a dress code. A few practical tips:

  • Skip strong perfume or cologne. It gets in the way of smelling the wine, yours and everyone else’s.
  • Dress in layers. Temecula days can be hot and the evenings cool off quickly.
  • Wear comfortable shoes if you’re planning to visit more than one stop.

Tips for a great first tasting

  • Eat first. Tasting on an empty stomach adds up fast.
  • Drink water between wines. It keeps your palate fresh and your head clear.
  • Plan a safe ride home. Book a driver, a tour, or a rideshare, or choose a designated driver.
  • Don’t overpack the day. Two or three wineries is plenty. You’ll enjoy each one more.
  • Take notes. Snap a photo of the bottles you like so you remember them later.
  • Buy what you love. If a wine stands out, it’s often only sold at the winery.
